Picture of Gypsies. Gypsies in images. A collection of gypsy-related items from the collection of Andrzej Grzymała Kazłowski

From 28 June 2019, you can visit a temporary exhibition presenting a collection of gypsy-related items at the Museum of Dialogue of Cultures from the private collection of Andrzej Grzymała-Kazłowski. The collection has been created since the 90s of the last century, being the result of professional and private contacts of its owner with the Roma environment in Poland and around the world, cooperation with collectors, antiquarians and numerous travels to India, the homeland of the Gypsies, and the Balkans.

At the temporary exhibition "Picture of Gypsies. Gypsies in images” you will be able to see items chosen from among 3,000 artefacts, mainly postcards, etchings, engravings, photographs, posters and paintings created by both Romani people and representatives of other nationalities. They include several-hundred-years-old depictions of Gypsy, often rich in stereotypical ideas about their life and culture, as well as photographs documenting the martyrdom of the Gypsy nation during World War II and paintings made by artists who are aware of their origins.

The exhibition will be complemented by items from everyday life of Gypsies, including everyday outfit, household/wagon objects, such as dishes, pots, ceramics, jewellery, trinkets, handicrafts, etc. One of the most valuable items from the collection is a gypsy-type Ostrów wagon from the 1950s and 1960s, which will be displayed in the external space of the Museum of Dialogue of Cultures.

Andrzej Grzymała-Kazłowski is a graduate of the Faculty of Political Sciences at the University of Warsaw, in 2001-2010 he was the main specialist for the Roma minority in the Ministry of Interior and Administration; currently he is an independent expert and researcher of the Roma culture.
