Time measured with a Swiss watch

Time measured with a Swiss watch

The exhibition entitled "Time measured with a Swiss watch" is dedicated to the last two years in the life of Henryk Sienkiewicz, which he spent in Switzerland. The small town of Vevey near Lausanne was the journey’s end for the "eternal wanderer," as he would refer to himself. Those were extraordinary years. Ailing and nearly 70 years of age, the writer did not give up on his civic duties. Horrified by the scale of destruction and human suffering caused by the chaos of war sweeping across the Polish soil, he decided to come to the aid of his fellow citizens. He took the helm of the General Committee of Relief for the Victims of the War in Poland, an organisation whose aim was to raise funds abroad to send them home. Aside from the author of the "Trilogy," important members of the Committee included Ignacy Paderewski (Committee’s Vice Chairman), Antoni Osuchowski and the Archbishop of Kraków, Adam Sapieha.

The years spent in Switzerland is the most obscure part of the biography of the Nobel Prize winner, although they were exceptionally important. The exhibition will include pictures of the last year in the writer's life - who passed away exactly one hundred years ago, on 15 November 1916 - his extensive correspondence, distinctions, diplomas and appeals for peace.

The exhibition will be held from 15 April to 31 August 2016 at the Henryk Sienkiewicz Mansion in Oblęgorek, branch of the National Museum in Kielce.
